Hehuanshan East Peak Trail Overview

Hehuanshan East Peak is 3,421 meters above sea level and is the second-highest peak of the Hehuanshan Group of Peaks. The trail offers distinctive scenery in all seasons, and along the trail is the highest concentration of azaleas in Yushan, with peach-colored azaleas all over the mountain in May and June.

In the past, there used to be a ski training ground on the east side of the East Peak, where the slope is relatively gentle, so abandoned cable car transfer stations can be seen along the trail. From the top, you can see the Mt. Zhongyangjian, Qilai Mountains,  Hehuan Mountains, Mt. Nenggao, Mt. Nanhu, and even Yushan at a glance.

Popularity

Hehuanshan East Peak is one of the most popular of 100 Peaks of Taiwan, and many people find it to be one of the easier trails among the 100 Peaks, making it suitable for those who are new to hiking. You can also take the Shimen mountain after climbing East Peak.

Suitable Season and Temperature

In spring, you can see azaleas in May and June, and the average temperature is about 15 degrees Celsius during the day and 5 degrees Celsius at night.

In summer, it is suitable for summer vacation and viewing the Milky Way, the average temperature is about 15 degrees Celsius, and in autumn, you can see the silver grass, the average temperature is about 10 degrees Celsius.

From Taipei to Taichung:

– By High Speed Rail: From Taipei High Speed Rail Station to Taichung High Speed Rail Station.

– By Taiwan Railway: From Taipei Station to Taichung Station.

From Taoyuan Airport to Taichung:

– To Taichung High Speed Rail Station: Take the Airport MRT to Taoyuan High Speed Rail Station, then take the High Speed Rail to Taichung High Speed Rail Station. – To Taichung Railway Station: Take bus 1623 to Taichung Railway Station (Minzu Intersection), ticket offices are located in the arrivals halls of Terminal 1 and 2.

From the Hehuanshan Mountain Visitor Centre parking lot to Songxue Lodge: Navigate to Songxue Lodge. When you see the Songxue Lodge red sign, walk towards the red arrow.

Reach the summit

Hiking Details

Trail Length, Round Trip Time, and Difficulty

One-way 1.1km, must return, 1.5 hours there, 1 hour back, total of 2 hours 30 minutes round trip, low difficulty, mostly stone steps, and wooden trestles, Hehuanshan East Peak is uphill the whole way, slightly more difficult than the main peak of Hehuanshan, the difference between the trailhead and the summit is about 300 meters.

Scenic spots along the trail

The remains of the cable car transfer station, originally Taiwan’s first ski resort but gradually disappeared due to climate change and insufficient snow, where you can take a photo with the huge cable car turntable.

Equipment

Mountaineering shoes, trekking poles, warm clothes (e.g. windproof jackets or down jackets), woolen hats, scarves, water, food, rain gear, sunscreen, and medicines.

Points to note

Easy to get altitude sickness, thin air on the mountain makes it easy to get short of breath, it is recommended to take several breaks in the middle of the hike, it may be windy on the mountain, so it is recommended to bring a windproof jacket and a hat, and in winter, you need to bring more down jackets and raincoat.

After climbing the Hehuanshan East Peak, if you still have stamina, you can climb another trail called Shimenshan.
Or you can go to Songxue Lodge, Wuling, or Shimenshan earlier to watch the sunrise before hiking the Hehuanshan East Peak.
